Who would have thought we would have sunny skies and temps in the 80’s in October! Certainly not us! There were almost 50 bikes entered in our first “traveling”event which was encouraging for future plans. This program ran on a skeleton form, only three classes compared to the normal six. However, the competition was just as tough as it gets back “home.” We had the whole place to ourselves and could not have been better treated by the owners and staff. If you’ve never been to MidState Dragway you owe it to yourself to give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

There was a drivers meeting to discuss how the program would run which was a little different than the norm. Steve Klemme won the Shootout which was a dial-in contest run right before first round.

We’ll go through all three classes starting in the semi final rounds of each. In Box Class, Greg Darm and Mark Abrams were up first. Darm leaves first but Abrams has the better RT. Suddenly, Abram’s bike missed second gear and let Darm regain the lead which he never relinquished. The other pair featured Chad Isley and Tim Kuehlem. Kuehlem got the holeshot over Isley by a hundredth. Kuehlem’s bike moves slightly toward the centerline out of the groove and slows allowing Isley to run only two over his dial to win while Kuehlem runs six over.

The Street bike class semi finals had an unusual combination of bikes in this round. Chad Isley on his Hondamatic, Randy Wyatt of his Busa and Amy Scwidcall on her DRZ 400 Enduro! How’s that for diversity? Chad Isley has a bye and runs an 8.362 on an 8.36 dial, he’s ready. Randy Wyatt and Amy Scwidcall were next. Amy leaves on a huge holeshot of six hundredths over the hard charging Randy Wyatt. On the big end however, Amy takes too much stripe and hands the round back to Wyatt.

The No Box semi final round had the pairings of John Renner against Dave Cozad and Scott Parker against Chris Hunter. The first pair out was Renner and Cozad. Renner is leaving first and goes red by .031 ending his hopes of winning the big money. Despite that small matter, Renner ran a one over turning a 5.73 on a 5.72 dial. Cozad broke out by .02. Scott Parker showed awesome sportsmanship in the semis when Chris Hunter’s bike died on the line. Parker, who was already staged, backed out and waited while a starter cart was rushed to the line to refire Hunter’s ride, very cool move indeed. Now it was game on. Hunter is leaving first and cuts a sweet .025 light, Parker right behind him cuts an even better .014 bulb. Remember, this is No Box! At the big end Parker wins running .01 over his dial while Hunter runs .02 over. Tough round for sure.

In the Box final round, Greg Darm would face Chad Isley. Darm giving chase to Isley drills the tree cutting an .022 to Isley’s sluggish .071. Oops, that’s gunna hurt. At the stripe Isley realizing he won’t take the stripe cuts Darm loose who then also dumps and wins running two over to Isley’s seven over. Darm advances to the King of The Hill round to face a racers to be named in two paragraphs.

The Street Bike Final round was between Chad Isley and Randy Wyatt. Wyatt was going to have to be patient waiting almost two seconds for Isley’s screaming Hondamatic to make it’s merry way down track. Isley leaves cutting a really safe . 109 RT. Wyatt all amped up couldn’t hold back the clutch any longer and goes big time red giving Isley the easy win.

The No Box Final round featured two of the quickest bikes on the grounds. Dave Cozad and Scott Parker were dialing in only a hundredth apart. Cozad a 5.57 to Parkers 5.56. Both riders leave with killer bulbs, Cozad a .014 to Parker’ s .018! No Box is not for the squeamish! This ended up being the tightest run of the day. Both riders hit their dial-ins on the head, Parker with a 1 and Cozad with a 6! MOV for Parker, .001! That one was a u-pick’um at the stripe.

The King of The Hill now pitted The Silver Fox, Greg Darm against the tough as nails Scott Parker. With the sun now completely set let’s see how it effects the riders on the tree. Darm would be giving away three tenths to Parker and leaving first. Darm leaves with an .020 RT. Parker does his job and cuts an . 029 RT. Race on! As they both blast through the beams, Parker breaks out by .006 and Darm runs on his 5.95 dial with a 6 for the win. Great run!
